Nokia vient de rendre public le code source pour un serveur web pour ses téléphones S60. Voir aussi I4U News - Nokia Releases S60 Apache Web Server Port under Open Source.

Je trouve l’idée très intéressante. Pas convaincu que ce soit un killer app, mais le concept est clairement à creuser. J’aime bien la possibilité d’avoir un front-end web pour les applications du téléphone, accessible du bureau si on oublie le mobile à la maison par exemple.

I wonder if some of what follows is forced by what I perceived to be a rather agressively deregulated telecom market in France. What ever the reasons, this speech is quite refreshing: France Telecom at eTel: Some Telco Frankness and Initiative at Last!. Two quotes from the summary of the talk:

“The fundamental point is voice and audio now just becomes another application on the Internet”
“the other thing that occurs, particularly in this world of convergence and integration between mobile and voice in particular is that one division cannibalises another. So we can have voice over IP, but that is going to screw up the revenue that we get over mobile. The mobile guys don’t want people to adopt voice over IP or fixed line telephony. They don’t want fixed lines in people’s homes. And at the same time we want to sell them DSL…So you have this kind of internal squabble going on, which I think creates a certain amount of paralysis as well.”

It does offer a lot of cheerleading for France Telecom strategies to overcome these “problems” as a telco.

Parlant d’ouvert et/ou libre, Joi Ito cite Irving Wladawsky-Berger’s definition of Open Standards:

If a crunch comes between the interests of the shareholders and interests of the community, a business has to choose the interests of the shareholders. A business creating a standard that it controls and says is ‘open’ and that people should ‘trust them’ is not robust from that perspective. Business should prevent itself from getting into these situation. Working with neutral professional organizations makes it impossible for such conflicts to corrupt the process and is key to good open standards.

Je trouve qu’il y va un peu vite sur le “impossible”, mais c’est le point qui me fait hocher la tête, c’est que le mot “open” est un buzzword (mot à la mode, dans le vent, ou encore jargonnerie, selon Termium), et qu’il est utilisé à toutes les sauces pour se réclamer de n’importe quoi.

Microsoft va apparemment “ouvrir” le format de fichiers d’Office: Microsoft to give Office access to rivals. Le tout sous l’égide de ECMA (pourquoi?), qui a une politique unique sur les brevets: RAND.

J’hesite entre considérer ça comme une tentative de sauver les meubles pour les contrat dans les administrations publiques ou voir ça comme une une decision qui va avoir des conséquences plus vastes.

Un petit 25$ de plus, en contrepartie de la satisfaction de contribuer “constructivement” au régime de la copie privée.

Est-ce que c’était clair de la dernière décision si la copie privée s’applique toujours aux oeuvres copiées sur des iPods? Je présume que oui puisque le tariff et le régime étaient indépendants. D’un autre coté, je crois me souvenir que le jugement excluait justement les iPods et cie parce que ce n’étaient pas des “supports” au sens de la loi, tout en les distinguant des disques durs à usage général dans les ordinateurs. Geist a pas l’air certain lui non plus.

De toutes façon, C-60 s’en vient avec ses gros souliers.
